The fonds consists of 171 letters from Tom McEwen, a leader of the Communist Party of Canada,to Lily Greene, 1944-1976, as well as photographs and an audio cassette. The letters are mainly of a personal nature, but many contain discussions of, or references to issues important to the Communist Party of Canada and elsewhere.

Thomas McEwen was born in Scotland and moved to Canada in 1912. A blacksmith by trade, he was active throughout his life in the labour movement and as a member of the Socialist Party of Canada and its successor, the Communist Party of Canada. He was also Secretary-General of the Workers' Unity League before its demise in 1936. Between 1931 and 1944, he was imprisoned for seven years for his communist activities. Born in Toronto, Lily (Steinman) Greene graduated as a stenographer in 1932 and throughout her career was involved in the union movement and, as a secretary to Tom McEwen-- the Communist Party of Canada. She is a charter member of the Ontario Voice of Women. During the Vietnam War she was involved in aid for Vietnamese children in the form of a knitting project.
